Network cabling in Oman isn't just a technical choice – it sits under a regulatory framework. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), established under Royal Decree 30/2002, regulates the telecommunications sector in Oman, including the internal wiring standards that buildings are expected to follow and the type-approval regime that telecom and networking equipment must clear before it can be used.
The wiring guidelines that apply to your building
The TRA has actively promoted quality internal wiring standards, after identifying poor internal cabling as a leading cause of connectivity complaints across the Sultanate. What applies depends on the building type:
Single-storey residential – Category 6 (CAT-6) or higher copper cabling from the main distribution box to every communication socket, with a dedicated cable run for each WiFi access point.
Multi-storey buildings – a main distribution box on the ground floor, connected to per-floor distribution boxes via ascending cable channels.
Larger and commercial buildings – a dedicated communications room and distribution boxes per unit, connected through structured cabling ducts rather than ad-hoc runs.
Larger developments – a central telecom room at the site core, linked to the boundary via dedicated conduits, with fiber optic cabling extending to individual units for high-speed service.
Two things follow from this that catch owners and fit-out teams out:
Cabling pathways need to be planned before fit-out, not squeezed in afterward. Once ceilings, walls and floors are finished, adding a dedicated communications room or proper containment becomes disruptive and expensive.
The networking equipment itself needs to be compliant. Routers, access points and other radio-transmitting network devices generally require TRA type approval before import or use in Oman – a step that's easy to miss when equipment is sourced informally.
