Where a shared key or PIN falls apart

A lost key means re-keying the whole door, or the whole building, before you can be sure it's secure again. A shared PIN or a passed-around card is worse - by the time three staff have left, you have no real idea who can still get in. Neither gives you a record of who entered, or when, which is exactly what you need after a stock loss, a break-in, or a dispute over who was on site.

Fingerprint and face readers aren't just a hardware decision

Fingerprint and facial recognition readers are convenient, but they collect biometric data, and that is not treated like an ordinary security decision in Oman. Under the Personal Data Protection Law issued by Royal Decree 6/2022, processing biometric data is restricted and generally requires authorisation from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, alongside proper consent and secure handling of that data. A supplier who specifies fingerprint or facial-recognition access without raising this is skipping a step you will have to deal with later. We design the credential strategy - card, keypad, or biometric - with this in mind from the start.

The mistakes that turn up during a site visit

In our experience the failure point is rarely the reader or the lock itself. It's the details around it: an electric lock specified as fail-secure on a door that sits on a fire escape route, when life-safety doors must fail-safe and release on power loss or fire alarm activation; credentials that are never deactivated when staff or tenants leave; no backup power, so the system drops the moment the mains does; outdoor readers and controllers that aren't rated for Oman's heat, dust or coastal humidity; and access control installed with no interface to the fire alarm panel, CCTV or building management system, leaving three separate systems that don't talk to each other.

RFID card access control

Proximity or smart cards read at the door, the most common choice for offices, retail and residential buildings. Cards are cheap to issue and instant to deactivate if lost.

Biometric access control

Fingerprint or facial recognition for higher-security doors, server rooms or restricted areas, specified with the data-protection requirements above accounted for.

PIN keypad access control

Beyond the standard door

Not every entry point is a standard door:
